Friday Fashion Flashback: Stretchy Headbands

From Gurl.com

Remember those thick, stretchy headbands in the 90s? That’s actually a style that I can realistically see people bringing back in 2012 and beyond. It’s not ridiculous (i.e. butterfly clips and hair chopsticks) and it’s pretty convenient and easy. Plus, aren’t headbands still cool or was that circa 2007 and Gossip Girl?

The only beef I had with these things is that I could never wear them. They never stuck on my head — maybe my hair was too slippery? Is that even possible? Plus, I had bangs so whenever I tried to sweep my bangs back with the headband, there would be these weird ends sticking up. I looked bad. But I so wished I had long hair and no bangs to pull of the look. Even so, I still had a whole bunch of them in different colors and patterns.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Abercrombie & Fitch

The first time I heard about Abercrombie & Fitch, it was from the LFO “Summer Girls” song. That’s not necessarily true, but it’s my first clear memory of it. I knew it was a store, but I never had put it into context. What can I say? I was in elementary school, and was really into the Limited Too.

Then we got one in our mall and we went to middle school. It was like A&F threw up on the girls in the hallways (and the boys, too, for that matter). A&F logo tees everywhere. That cologne, THAT COLOGNE. The scent haunts my nightmares.

Honestly, I had a few items. But I had to buy them myself. My mom was not too keen on spending $50 for a t-shirt.

Looking back, I just want to slap myself.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Midriff Tops

I was into midriff tops, or crop tops, thanks to a certain pop singer named Britney Spears. (You might have heard of her?) Then JLo and Christina Aguilera and a slew of other popstars also showed off their tummies, so of course, I wanted to too! Anyways, I remember my mom telling me that it was a “cute look” which was not, I later learned, a try for reverse psychology. She really did think they were cute. Might be having to do with the fact that I was in sixth grade, so like, I guess it kind of was? Anyway, I rocked it in both a pink and purple number, usually with some jean shorts from LEI.

Now, the midriff top is back, with stars like Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus sporting the look. That’s cool, guys, except now I really feel like I need to start hitting the gym more. My midriff isn’t the same size as when I was eleven.

Friday Fashion Flashback: L.A. Lights Sneakers

I sadly could not find a photo of my pink shoes.

Of course I had a pair of light-up sneakers. Who didn’t? I liked things flashy and I liked to walk down the mean streets of Pasadena, California (Rose Bowl, holla) lighting everything up. Everyone had to know I was arriving by those bright red lights, right? It was cool.

The original light-up shoes were L.A. Lights. All the rest were posers. I had a pair of pink ones that I would only bring out for special occasions. God forbid they get scuffed up. Mine had glittery shoelaces on it. I loved them so much. I would stomp around everywhere I went testing out the lights and being entranced by them. Did I mention as a child (and this might also extend to my adult life) I was easily distracted by shiny, bright and glittery things?

Can we please make L.A. Gear cool again? I want a new pair of light-up sneakers. I think I would especially enjoy wearing them in movie theaters, around my apartment with the lights off or maybe in a dark club.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Butterfly Hairclips

GIVE ME ALL THE COLORS.

Butterflies. Near the end of the 90s, these winged creatures really hit their stride. They were on purses, shirts, and most importantly — they were made into mini hair clips to make us pre-teens look beautiful.

Some people just clipped their hair on the side. Or used them around a ballerine-esque bun. That was for amateurs. The best way to use the clips? To take tiny sections of your hair in the front, and twist them back towards the crown of your head, securing them with a clip. In essence? Thin cornrows.

Sure, you might have baby-hair in the front that you might want to slick back with some LA Looks hair gel. And yeah, if you twisted too-tightly you might get a headache and your scalp might itch. And okay, granted, sometimes your clip would get knocked out of place and you’d have to hurry to the bathroom to fix it. BUT HEY! That’s a small price for looking good, am I right?

The best place to grab these was Claire’s. Usually they came in assorted colors. My favorites were these purples ones that had glitter on them, you know, for special occasions. The most important thing was making sure all your clips lined up perfectly on your head. One twist couldn’t be shorter than another. C’mon, that’d look pretty stupid.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Stick-On Earrings

I got my ears pierced before I even turned one, so I don’t even know why I was fascinated with stick on earrings. For some reason I was obsessed with them. Maybe it was that my mom insisted I had “sensitive ears” so I could only get the boring earrings and not the cool colorful ones. I only wore gold or silver studs. That was it. Yawn.

But I loved wearing stick-on earrings when it was time to play dress up. They were colorful, came in tons of shapes and had sparkles. I’m a sucker for sparkles. I exclusively wore the circle ones (if the came in pink or purple) or the heart or stars. I refused to wear the other shapes. But now looking back, what was the point of wearing stickers that were poser earrings? You know they’re fake. Everyone knows they’re fake. And they came off all the time. No adhesive whatsoever. You were better off with clip-on earrings (which I also liked wearing, too).

Do they even make stick-on earrings anymore? Or did they go to the place where crazy fashion jewelry (tattoo chokers, slap bracelets, etc.) go to die?

Friday Fashion Flashback: Slap Bracelets

SLAP IT

Oh good ol’ slap bracelets. A fashion accessory, toy and torture device rolled into one. Quick summary: it’s basically a flat band that’s wrapped in plastic or fabric, that you can bend (or slap!) onto your wrist to form a bracelet.

I’m not sure where or when I got my first slap bracelet: they’ve been burned in my memory since the beginning of time aka since the first time my sister asked me, “Sam, want to be pretty?” and BAM! The pain of the slap bracelet, as hard as she could slap it, would come down on my tiny wrist. “THERE.” BIG SISTERS ARE THE BEST.

I did, on occasion, actually enjoy wearing them, and had a few different ones: a zebra-print one, a bright green neon one, a silver holographic one, and one that was red with a chinese print. These things were in heavy rotation for like, six solid months, which is pretty much FOREVER in kid time. Looking back, I’m not sure who decided that these “bracelets” were actually a good look. They kind of just remind me of prisoner cuffs, i.e. Genie before he’s (SPOILER ALERT) set free:

trendy

Apparently, stores are still selling these things and marketers are using them for promotional products. Um, when did stickers go out of style? That shit never hurt anyone.
