Friday Fashion Flashback: Stretchy Headbands

From Gurl.com

Remember those thick, stretchy headbands in the 90s? That’s actually a style that I can realistically see people bringing back in 2012 and beyond. It’s not ridiculous (i.e. butterfly clips and hair chopsticks) and it’s pretty convenient and easy. Plus, aren’t headbands still cool or was that circa 2007 and Gossip Girl?

The only beef I had with these things is that I could never wear them. They never stuck on my head — maybe my hair was too slippery? Is that even possible? Plus, I had bangs so whenever I tried to sweep my bangs back with the headband, there would be these weird ends sticking up. I looked bad. But I so wished I had long hair and no bangs to pull of the look. Even so, I still had a whole bunch of them in different colors and patterns.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Capris

Oh, capris. Or petal pushers. Or clam diggers. Or cropped pants. Whatever you called them they were HUGE back in the early 2000s. And don’t get me wrong, they’re still pretty fashionable now. I still wear them, but I guess they go by the more formal and trendy cropped pants now.

But remember when everyone wore capris? You’d wear them with sandals, flats or my favorite combo, socks and sneakers (oh man that was really not a good look for me, it just made me look really stumpy). I had a floral pair (why oh why), a denim pair, two khaki ones and a black pair. I wore them to school (on free dress days, since I went to Catholic school), to church (my nice black pair obviously), on vacation, running errands with my mom, etc. They were a wardrobe staple for me. Since I grew up in Southern California, long pants weren’t needed most of the time so capris were a good choice. I hate wearing pants but love wearing shorts, so when it got cold, capris were my compromise. I still totally advocate this trend solely on this fact. Let’s never stop wearing capris. Unless you’re a man. Then those are called manpris and no one (the wearer and those around them) should be subjected to that.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Abercrombie & Fitch

The first time I heard about Abercrombie & Fitch, it was from the LFO “Summer Girls” song. That’s not necessarily true, but it’s my first clear memory of it. I knew it was a store, but I never had put it into context. What can I say? I was in elementary school, and was really into the Limited Too.

Then we got one in our mall and we went to middle school. It was like A&F threw up on the girls in the hallways (and the boys, too, for that matter). A&F logo tees everywhere. That cologne, THAT COLOGNE. The scent haunts my nightmares.

Honestly, I had a few items. But I had to buy them myself. My mom was not too keen on spending $50 for a t-shirt.

Looking back, I just want to slap myself.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Ugg Boots

Yes, I do realize people still wear Ugg boots. I still throw my pair on every now and then. But if you’re wearing them as a fashion statement rather than for comfort in 2012, we need to have a heart-to-heart later. They were pretty trendy back in the early 2000s. Everyone owned them and wore them with basically anything. Celebs loved them. People would pair them with Juicy Couture tracksuits (the ultimate lazy but trendy outfit), denim skirts, jeans and leggings. It wasn’t a really bad trend when you think about it. Although you kinda looked like a lumberjack, your feet were pretty damn comfy and warm.

I had a pair back in high school. Why I needed to wear Uggs in Southern California (where the coldest it ever gets is 50 degrees), I’ll never know. But every girl at my all-girls high school wore them to school so of course I had to have them too. And god forbid you got a counterfeit pair like Emus or something. My favorite outfit to pair them with was a pink sweater and denim skirt. Wow, I made some pretty bad fashion choices when I was 14.

I’m not trashing Uggs. I actually think they were pretty useful and super comfy. But wearing them out in public when you’re not running errands or going to the library to study or commuting to work is a big no-no.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Headband Bandanas/Hankerchiefs

Image

Does anyone remember these things? You could buy them at Claires and it was basically a triangular piece of fabric hanging off of a headband, to make it look like you had actually tied a bandana or hankerchief on your head. I had, like, three and thought I looked really good in them in the fourth grade. Now I just look back and shake my head. Worst look ever.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Toe Rings

Sorry for posting a photo of feet. They skeeve me out too. Unless you have a foot fetish, feet are not pretty. So why were we showing them off with toe rings? I don’t understand why everyone felt the need to put jewelry on their gross feet, but we did. Yes, I was a big fan of the toe ring when I was a pre-teen. Apparently I thought it really pulled my look together.

I normally put them on my middle toe or the one right next to me big toe (I don’t even know what that’s called). I had a few toe rings, but most of them were silver, had some sort of flower design and a gem and were from Claire’s. I wore them with my platform flip flops all over the place and of course, I wore them with an anklet (that’s for another post). Remember those exotic ones that were attached to an anklet?

Do people still wear toe rings anymore? I was Googling toe rings and I saw that Jennifer Aniston wore one on the red carpet a few years ago. I really don’t know if I can get behind this trend if it every becomes popular again. But I guess you can never say never.

Friday Fashion Flashback: L.A. Lights Sneakers

I sadly could not find a photo of my pink shoes.

Of course I had a pair of light-up sneakers. Who didn’t? I liked things flashy and I liked to walk down the mean streets of Pasadena, California (Rose Bowl, holla) lighting everything up. Everyone had to know I was arriving by those bright red lights, right? It was cool.

The original light-up shoes were L.A. Lights. All the rest were posers. I had a pair of pink ones that I would only bring out for special occasions. God forbid they get scuffed up. Mine had glittery shoelaces on it. I loved them so much. I would stomp around everywhere I went testing out the lights and being entranced by them. Did I mention as a child (and this might also extend to my adult life) I was easily distracted by shiny, bright and glittery things?

Can we please make L.A. Gear cool again? I want a new pair of light-up sneakers. I think I would especially enjoy wearing them in movie theaters, around my apartment with the lights off or maybe in a dark club.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Stick-On Earrings

I got my ears pierced before I even turned one, so I don’t even know why I was fascinated with stick on earrings. For some reason I was obsessed with them. Maybe it was that my mom insisted I had “sensitive ears” so I could only get the boring earrings and not the cool colorful ones. I only wore gold or silver studs. That was it. Yawn.

But I loved wearing stick-on earrings when it was time to play dress up. They were colorful, came in tons of shapes and had sparkles. I’m a sucker for sparkles. I exclusively wore the circle ones (if the came in pink or purple) or the heart or stars. I refused to wear the other shapes. But now looking back, what was the point of wearing stickers that were poser earrings? You know they’re fake. Everyone knows they’re fake. And they came off all the time. No adhesive whatsoever. You were better off with clip-on earrings (which I also liked wearing, too).

Do they even make stick-on earrings anymore? Or did they go to the place where crazy fashion jewelry (tattoo chokers, slap bracelets, etc.) go to die?

Friday Fashion Flashback: Overalls

definitely not the ones I had as a child

I’ll admit it, I was a big fan of overalls when I was younger. I mean they were pretty dang comfortable. It was like wearing a romper (which is a huge trend right now, but yet why can’t I ever find one that doesn’t make me look like an oversized baby?), except it was flattering on EVERYONE. And I mean everyone: farmers, truck drivers, your mom and your dad, babies, kids, etc. Everyone looks good in jeans and overalls are basically jeans, so that’s my logic right there.

I really liked them because you didn’t have to stress too much on your outfit. You just chose a plain shirt, preferably a bright color to jazz up your outfit, snapped the overalls on and bam, you were ready to go to day camp or hanging out with your friends. I had a pair of overalls with Winnie the Pooh on them when I was like 8 or 9. They were super comfy and who doesn’t love Winnie the Pooh?

Now let’s get a couple things straight here, no, I did not wear overalls past the age of 10. Also, they were always overall shorts. Not the long ones. Why trap yourself in them? I hate wearing pants so long overalls would be my worst nightmare. And I do realize the problem of having to pee. It was a lot more work. But how do people pee when they’re wearing rompers nowadays?

I’m trying to imagine what it would be like if overalls were suddenly cool again. Yeah, people still wear them, but most of the people are hipsters who wear them ironically or they’re farmers. Everyone would be super comfortable. And you would have so many pockets, you probably wouldn’t need a purse. Plus, if you don’t think it’s sexy enough, put a bandeau top underneath instead of a conservative tee. That’s a trendy summer look right there. Sadly, I don’t think this fashion statement will be coming back anytime soon, but a girl can dream.

Friday Fashion Flashback: Jelly Shoes

Remember jelly shoes? Now, I know they were trendy a few years ago — grown women were wearing them! I like to think they were getting nostalgic about their childhoods with that fashion choice. But really, I’m talking about when they were trendy way back in the 80s and early 90s. I called them my “Cinderella shoes.” They looked like glass slippers! I was (and still am) obsessed with Disney princesses, so of course I had to have them. I don’t even remember how many pairs I had.

I always got the clear ones with glitter specks on them because they looked most like a glass slipper. Were they comfy? Probably not in the blazing California sun (doesn’t plastic melt?), but I wore them religiously. And every time one broke, I’d beg my mom to get me another pair. They were my go-to shoe, when I wasn’t wearing slippers that looked like stuffed animals or boat shoes (which I hated wearing as a child, but now I need a pair — ain’t it always the way?)

Oddly enough, I never bought a new pair of jelly shoes for my grown-up feet when they were trendy a couple of years ago. I think I just wanted to keep jelly shoes a childhood classic. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get a pair this summer — clear ones, of course.
